You can become an expert without presenting, but presenting can help demonstrate your expertise.

Why not find out about giving a small presentation to colleagues? Present material that you learned at a recent UG event. Focus on conveying the material, because that's what the audience wants from you.

At some point, you can put together a presentation yourself (for colleagues), and then offer to give it at a UG. I'm sure Grant will help you make the transition to presenter.

Good luck with it all!

Rob

great post Rob, i've linked to it from my blog so i can re-read it from time to time.

i find the section about presenting at user groups particularly relevant as i am hoping to make that jump soon. One thing though, how do you recommend people make that step, from the audience perspective, where i am now, it seems like a massive jump and that to present you need to be an expert in the field, however to get near expert level you need to present....so on and so forth

i guess it is just a matter of taking the leap out front and running with it, but i was wondering if you can recall your earlier presenting experiences and if you had any tips for the newbie.
